Last year however, following the December 12<sup>th<\/sup> general election, investors saw a sharp \u201cBoris rally\u201d, with the FTSE 100 having put on an impressive 5% since the Conservative\u2019s stonking victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we enter a new year, we see many further opportunities\nfor investors, and entrepreneurs in particular, assuming that the Tory\u2019s\nexecute their pre-election promises. Their manifesto was notably business\nfriendly, with a significant section dedicated to <em>\u201cMake Britain the best place to start and grow a business\u201d. <\/em>Here\nare four things to watch out for in 2020, especially around Chancellor Sajid\nJavid\u2019s upcoming Budget on 11<sup>th<\/sup> March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Encouraging\ninnovation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has for a long time encouraged investment in\nstart-ups, especially via the tax beneficial <a href=\"https:\/\/crowdforangels.com\/tax-relief\"><strong>EIS and SEIS schemes<\/strong><\/a>, which are set to remain in place during\nthe current session of Parliament. Going one step further, the R&amp;D tax\ncredit scheme is set to increase to 13%, up from a current level of 12%.\nPerhaps more importantly for some firms, the definition of R&amp;D will be\nreviewed so that investments in cloud computing and data, which boost\nproductivity and innovation, are also incentivised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lower business rates<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK business rates have been a significant burden on\ncompanies which operate out of a physical property in recent years. Many\nsectors, especially high street retail, have suffered as rising rates eat into\nmargins in what are already challenging times. The Conservatives have promised\nto reduce business rates, although the only detail we have is that it will be\ndone following a \u201cfundamental review of the system\u201d. Encouragingly, as a first\nstep, the plan is to reduce rates for retail businesses specifically, as well\nas extending the discount to grassroots music venues, small cinemas and pubs.\nCheers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Increase in the\nEmployment Allowance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also helping margins, the Tory\u2019s have committed to increase\nthe Employment Allowance for small businesses. This boon allows firms to reduce\ntheir employers\u2019 Class 1 National Insurance payments up to a maximum of \u00a33,000\neach tax year. While we don\u2019t know the extent of the increase yet, it is\nestimated to create a tax cut for half a million small firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Influx of new\nentrepreneurs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Exceptional Talent Visa provides a way to working in the\nUK for individuals outside of the EEA considered to be a recognised or emerging\nleader in fields such as science, medicine, engineering and digital technology.\nThere is currently an annual cap of 2,000 such visas but it has been suggested\nthat this limit will be revised or even scrapped, enabling more entrepreneurs\nto start their businesses here in the UK.
